Once upon a time, a little old woman and a little old man lived in a small house.
One day, the little old woman said, "I will bake a gingerbread man!"
She mixed the dough, rolled it flat, and cut out a little man with arms and legs.
She gave him raisin eyes, a cherry nose, and a wide smiling mouth.
When she put him in the oven to bake, the little old man waited by the door.
Soon, the oven door popped open, and out jumped the gingerbread man!
"Stop! Stop!" cried the little old woman and the little old man. But the gingerbread man ran away.
As he ran, he called out: "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
A cow in the field saw him. "Stop, little gingerbread man! I want to eat you!" said the cow. But he ran faster, singing his song.
A horse joined the chase. "Stop!" neighed the horse. But the gingerbread man laughed and ran on, still singing.
A farmer and his dog tried to catch him too. They ran and ran, but he was too quick.
Soon he came to a wide river. He stopped. He could not swim.
A sly fox stepped out from behind a tree. "I can help you cross," said the fox. "Jump on my tail."
The gingerbread man climbed onto the fox's tail. But as they crossed the river, the fox said, "You are too heavy! Jump onto my back." Then onto his head… Then onto his nose…
And quick as a wink, the fox tossed him up and snapped! The gingerbread man was gone. And that was the end of the Gingerbread Man.
