Ella loved adventures. She loved seeking treasure. Most of all, she loved running to the rocky hill behind her house. Today felt like a perfect day to explore. She grabbed her backpack and ran outside. “Here I come, treasure!” she shouted.
The rocky hill had something new—a dark stone cave opening. It looked mysterious and cool. Ella stepped inside. It was shadowy, but not scary. She heard her own breathing bounce around her. “Hello?” she called out. “Hello? Hello? HELLO?” the cave answered back.
Ella's eyes grew wide. “Did the cave just talk to me?” she whispered. “...talk to me?” the cave whispered back. She laughed. The cave laughed too, in echo. This was the best treasure ever. “I'm going to find the biggest echo in the world,” Ella decided.
She made a plan. First: shout louder. Second: find the deepest part of the cave. Third: hear the most enormous, powerful echo ever. Ella was so excited she could barely stand still. She took a deep breath and shouted as loud as she could. “TREASURE! TREASURE! TREASURE!”
“TREASURE! TREASURE! TREASURE!” the cave roared back. But it wasn't as loud as Ella hoped. It sounded smaller, not bigger. She frowned. “Maybe the cave is broken,” she said. She tried again, even louder. Her voice hurt. Still, the echo stayed the same size. Ella sat down. “This is not working.”
Just then, a girl appeared at the cave entrance. “Why are you yelling?” she asked. “I'm looking for the biggest echo,” Ella said. The girl smiled. “I'm Maya. I live near here. Can I try something?” Before Ella could answer, Maya walked to the deepest part of the cave.
Maya didn't shout. She sang instead. “Laaaaaa...” The note floated softly through the cave. Then something magical happened. The echo came back so clear, so smooth, so beautiful. It was like the cave was singing with her. Ella's mouth fell open. “You didn't yell. You made it even better.”
“Louder isn't always better,” Maya said. “In caves, listening matters more than shouting.” Ella nodded slowly. She had been so busy trying to make noise that she forgot to listen. “Can I try?” she asked. Maya nodded. Together they walked to the deepest spot.
Ella opened her mouth. Then she stopped. She listened first. She heard the cave's quiet whispers. She heard tiny drips of water far away. She heard Maya breathing beside her. Then, very softly, Ella sang: “Hmmmmmm...” The echo came back like a hug.
“You did it!” Maya cheered quietly. “That was the most beautiful echo!” Ella grinned. Not because it was the loudest. Because she understood now. The cave wasn't broken. She had been listening wrong.
Every afternoon now, Ella and Maya went to the cave together. Sometimes they shouted. Sometimes they whispered. Sometimes they just listened to the sounds around them. Ella still loved adventures. But now she knew something even better: the best treasures appear when you stop and listen.
