Yo loved to sing everywhere. In her room, her voice sounded soft like a whisper. But in the bathroom, it sounded big and powerful! “Why does my voice change?” she wondered.
“Maybe the bathroom has magic singing powers,” Yo guessed. She grabbed her toy microphone and ran to test her idea. [PARENT PROMPT: What do you think Yo will discover?]
In the bathroom, Yo sang her favorite song. “La la la!” Her voice bounced around like a bouncing ball. She sang in her bedroom. “La la la.” It sounded regular. “The bathroom IS magic!” she decided.
Yo's friend Sam came over. “Listen to this!” Yo said. They both sang in the bathroom. Their voices sounded amazing! “We should have all our concerts here,” Sam laughed.
But then Yo sang in the kitchen. Her voice sounded different again - not soft, not big, but somewhere in between. “Wait,” Yo said. “If only the bathroom is magic, why does the kitchen sound different too?”
Yo looked around. The bathroom had hard tiles. The bedroom had soft carpet and curtains. The kitchen had some hard surfaces and some soft ones. “Maybe it's not magic,” Yo said slowly.
“Let's test it!” Sam suggested. They sang in the garage with its concrete walls. Their voices boomed even louder than the bathroom! “Whoa!” they both shouted, and the “whoa” echoed back.
“I get it now!” Yo said. “Hard surfaces make our voices bounce back to us. Soft things catch the sound like a pillow.” She touched the garage wall. “That's why we hear echoes here!”
Yo and Sam made up a game. “Guess where I'm singing!” Yo called from the closet full of clothes. Her voice sounded muffled and quiet. “Somewhere soft!” Sam guessed correctly. [PARENT PROMPT: Where in your house do you think voices echo most?]
The next day, Yo taught her little brother about echoes. “Sing in here,” she said in the bathroom. His eyes went wide when his voice bounced back. “The sound is playing with me!” he giggled.
Now Yo knew her voice wasn't changing - it was dancing with different rooms! She made a “Voice Adventure Map” of her house, marking the best spots for different songs. Soft lullabies in the bedroom, powerful performances in the bathroom!
