Chichi pushed open the shed door. Scraps! Sticks! String! “Benny,” she said, “I have an idea.”

“Let's make a kite!” said Chichi. Benny tilted his big head. “A kite? Us?” “Yes,” said Chichi. “Together.”

Chichi grabbed the scissors and cut. Snip! Snip! SNIP! The paper came out wonky. Very, very wonky.

Benny laid the sticks down carefully. He taped one side. Then the other. Then the corners. S-l-o-w-l-y. Chichi's foot tapped the whole time.

They held the kite up. It was lopsided. It was lumpy. Chichi's ears drooped. “It looks wrong,” she said.

Benny tied on a long string tail. He smiled. “Looks just right to me.” Chichi was not so sure. But she picked up the string.

Outside, the wind found the kite. Fast! It pulled. It tugged. It shot straight up! Chichi gasped.

Chichi ran. The string went taut in her paws. She felt the tug lift her right up on her toes. She laughed so loud it echoed.

Up, up, up went the kite! Higher and higher! “It's flying, Benny! It's really flying!” Chichi shouted. Benny cheered with his whole round body.

“Wonky paper flies the best!” Chichi called down. “I believe it,” Benny called back. “I absolutely believe it.”

The kite bobbed and dipped in the last warm breeze. Chichi and Benny held the string together. It was their kite. All theirs.
