Boris loved puzzles more than leaves or bugs. His favorite puzzle box gleamed in the sun. “Today I'll solve you!” he said.
He tried pushing. He tried pulling. He tried turning it upside down. Nothing worked. “Puzzles shouldn't be THIS tricky!”
Boris noticed something strange. A dark shape moved when he moved. It stretched long, then got short. “What ARE you?” he wondered.
He waved his arm. The shape waved too! He jumped high. So did the shape! “You're copying me!” Boris giggled. “But why?”
Boris put a leaf between himself and the sun. The copying shape disappeared! “Oh!” he said. “You need light to exist!”
He looked at his puzzle box. Its shadow made a perfect square. But wait—the shadow had something extra. A secret pattern!
“Shadows show shapes differently!” Boris turned the box. Each side's shadow revealed new clues. The shadows were the key!
Following the shadow patterns, Boris pressed here, twisted there. Click! The puzzle box opened. Inside sparkled a tiny crystal sun.
“I know what to do!” Boris held the crystal up. It cast rainbow shadows everywhere—butterflies, flowers, even dancing mantises!
He spent all afternoon making shadow shows. A rabbit hopped. A bird flew. His friends gathered to watch the magical shadows dance.
As the sun set, Boris put on his biggest show yet. “Shadows aren't just dark shapes,” he said. “They're puzzle pieces of light!”
