The farm was full of noise and life. Hens clucked. Sheep baa-ed. The dog barked and ran. But Mumu stood all alone in the meadow. She watched. She waited. Nobody came.
“I am going to find a friend!” said Mumu. She lifted her chin. She flicked her red bow. She trotted across the clover, quick and brave.
She found the hens. She clucked her very best cluck. The hens pecked and pecked. They didn't even look up. Mumu walked away because nobody noticed her.
She found the sheep. She tried a gentle baa. But out came a giant — “MOO!” The sheep jumped and scattered. Mumu blinked. “Oops,” she said.
She found the dog. Run! Jump! Chase! Mumu ran. She jumped. She huffed. The dog zoomed away, so Mumu flopped into the grass, panting.
Mumu sat very still. Her ears drooped. “Maybe I am too different,” she whispered. The meadow felt very big and very quiet.
Then — WADDLE, WADDLE, PLOP. A tiny yellow duckling plopped down right beside Mumu. She looked up at Mumu with bright, curious eyes. “Hello!” she said.
“Can you teach me to MOO?” asked the duckling. “It sounds amazing!” Mumu's ears shot straight up. “My MOO?” she said. “Really?” “REALLY!” said the duckling.
So Mumu mooed. Big. Brave. Beautiful. The duckling tried too — “MOO-QUACK!” They both giggled. They mooed and quacked together, louder and louder. What a glorious, silly song!
The hens stopped pecking. The sheep trotted over. The dog skidded to a halt. Everyone gathered around, ears perked. Mumu looked up. The meadow was full — full of friends!
Later, Mumu and the duckling sat together in the warm, whispery grass. “Same time tomorrow?” asked the duckling. Mumu smiled her biggest smile. “MOO,” she said. That meant yes.
