The fountain square was bright and sunny. A tiny sparrow sat on the fountain's edge. “Oh! Oh! Oh!” she chirped. Her softest feather had fallen in!
Sophie stretched her long neck down, down, down. She could almost reach the feather. Just a little further…
SPLASH! Sophie's nose hit the water. A very round pigeon got soaked from beak to tail. “PRRROO?!” the pigeon squawked.
The pigeon shook — WHOOSH-WHOOSH-WHOOSH! Every drop flew onto Monsieur Bretz's pretzel cart. “Sacré bleu!” he sputtered. His pretzels were soggy!
Monsieur Bretz threw his hands up. PLOP! His striped apron sailed into the fountain. Now the apron was in the water too!
Sophie swooped her neck out wide and long. She lifted the feather AND the apron in one big swoop. “Got them!” she sang.
Sophie held the feather out to the sparrow. The pigeon giggled. Monsieur Bretz laughed so hard his moustache wiggled. The whole square laughed with them!
