On a warm summer day, a mother duck sat on her nest, waiting for her eggs to hatch.
One by one, the eggs cracked open. Yellow ducklings popped out, chirping happily.
But one large egg was still there. At last, it cracked open too.
Out came a big, gray duckling. He looked different from the others.
The other ducklings stared. "He's so big and ugly," they said.
The gray duckling felt sad. Even the other animals on the farm laughed at him.
One day, he ran away. He left the farm to find a place where he belonged.
He met wild ducks, but they did not want him either.
Autumn came. The leaves turned gold and red. The duckling saw beautiful white birds flying in the sky.
Winter arrived. It was cold and lonely. The duckling almost froze in the icy pond.
A kind farmer found him and took him home to warm him.
But the duckling was frightened and ran away again.
Spring came. The sun shone, and flowers bloomed.
The duckling saw the beautiful white birds again. He looked at his reflection in the water.
He was no longer a gray duckling. He had grown into a beautiful swan. And at last, he felt happy.
